Overview

There are two family trees stored here, the Smith family centered around L. K. Smith Sr. and Frances Stokes Smith, and the Searle family centered around Helen Hartman Searle and Lawrence G. Searle. Those are, of course, the parents of Sam Smith and Laurie Searle, your hosts for this website.

The Smith family tree

There are lots of surnames in our past. The actual Smith surname cannot be traced back past Emmett Aaron Smith, since I do not think there is any way to determine his father. The other surnames include Stokes, Britt, Rye, Fields, Powers, Harrison, Wiliford, Carpenter, Rutherford, Bullard, and others yet to be discovered. The names may be strange to us, but they are all direct ancestors.

Who were these people? They were poor, white farmers, with large families and no property. Many of them were illiterate. When they weren't farming they worked in the cotton mills and lumber mills. They lived in the border counties between North Carolina and South Carolina, including Robeson and Columbus in NC, and Darlington, Florence, Marlboro, and Marion in SC. Also Macon and Chilton couties in Alabama and an unknown county in Georgia. They hardly ever lived in a town; when they did, it was because they were working in a cotton mill.

When I started this genealogy project my hope was to discover when our ancestors first set foot on American soil and where they came from. I have been unsuccesful so far. Our family was in America before there was a United States. The surnames are all English, but so far I can't link any person with England.

Another hope I had was to discover if any of our ancestors owned slaves. I am sorry to report that James K. Fields is listed in the 1850 census as owning one slave, an eleven year old boy. We can take some comfort in the fact that by 1860 he owned no slaves, and he only owned one. I'm still doing more research, of course. His link to us is somewhat confused. Be sure to read the notes on his entry.

There are lots of gaps left to be filled in, especially of maiden names, which will add more surnames to our history. Stay tuned!

The Searle Family tree

The Searle's have a much more varied and affluent past than the Smiths. Laurie is a distant cousin of Charlton Heston, and her great-great grandfather James Charlton was a railroad tycoon in the midwest. In contrast to the Smith family, it was easy to trace her ancestors back to England, Wales, Germany and Hungary. There are also plenty of coal miners and even a saloon keeper in the family.

another cemetery trip
13 November 2006 - 10:39:28am

Went over this weekend to visit Jerry in the hospital, and combined the trip with some research. I hunted for the Field's cemetery in Robeson County and never found it, and for Evander Stokes in Mars Bluff, SC, and never found it, but I did locate Harley and Lucy Britt in Boardman, NC and Hohn and Theadosia Stokes in Darlington. That's two set of my four sets of great-grandparents - not to bad. Of course the SMith great-grandparents will never be found, so that just leaves the Wrye ‎(Rye)‎ set to locate.
Searching for tombstones
4 November 2006 - 7:30:11pm

Traveled to Chilton and Macon Counties in Alabama ‎(and all the counties in-between!)‎ looking for graves. Found I.O. Rutherford and Nancy An Rutherford in Chilton County, but did not find Sarah E or Sarah Jane Rutherford either there or in Macon County. Searched three cemetarys in Macon County with no result.
Lots more data added
24 October 2006 - 8:21:13pm

I made a trip to SC to see Jerry and Mary Jo and took my scanner. Copied Jerry's old photos and documents, then spent a few days updating the site.

Got some excellent old pictures as well as some new maiden names to research.
SC Genealogical data
24 July 2006 - 10:35:53am

I sent away for copies of cards from an old-fashioned database of facts that are kept on index cards. They have never been converted to computer, and only an index to surnames is available. Many of our surnames were listed, including Stokes, Britt, Powers, and Fields. I got about 100 pages of photocopies in the mail, but not a single card referenced one of our ancestors. Oh well. I still have a query out to the Daughters of the Confederacy; hopefully I will get some useful info from them.

Evander Stokes tombstone and military record
14 July 2006 - 9:19:13am

Scanned the tombstone picture and added it to Evander's facts. We have to take what's on the tombstone as fact, I guess, but the skeptic in me wants to ask who put it up? Who paid for it? When was it erected?

Based on the tombstone I'm sure the E. Stokes listed in the civil war records is him, since the regiment and company matches.

That regiment was at Cold Harbor, which means we had two ancestors in that battle.

Of course, I cannot verify that Evander was actually there, not at this time. I am sure that James K Fields was there, since he was captured and sent to Elmira POW camp.

All original notes now on web page

I finally got all the original notes I had gathered as well as the sources up on the web page. From now on it will be a slow slog to research and add more material here.

Nimrod Britt ancestors removed
12 July 2006 - 2:38:03pm

I removed the ancestors of Nimrod Britt. I had them confused with a family that moved to AR/TX in the early 19th century - not the same people.
